Dana Sutton is a respected scholar of classical drama, mostly known for his groundbreaking war on satyr drama. The book at hand is not his most scholarly achievement: its intended readership is much wider. The readings of plays it includes are not always original or altogether cogent. Nevertheless, it is one of the few full-scale treatments of this all-important comic motif available in English.
