Fundamentals of DATABASE SYSTEMS, Fifth Edition

Ramez Elmasri, University of Texas at Arlington

Shamkant B. Navathe, Georgia Institute of Technology

ISBN 0-321-36957-2

“Fundamentals of Database Systems is a leading example of a database text that approaches the subject from the technical, rather than the business perspective. It offers instructors more than enough material to choose from as they seek to balance coverage of theoretical with practical material, design with programming, application concerns with implementation issues, and items of historical interest with a view of cutting edge topics.

–Henry A. Etlinger, Rochester Institute of Technology

This is an outstanding, up-to-date database book, appropriate for both undergraduate and graduate courses. It contains good examples, and clearly describes how to design good, operable databases as well as retrieve and manipulate data from an existing database.

–Peter Ng, The University of Texas - Pan American

With clear explanations of theory and design, broad coverage of models and real systems, and an up-to-date introduction to modern database technologies, Elmasri and Navathe’s text continues to be the leading introduction to database systems. Current, practical examples keep readers engaged while new end-of-chapter exercises and a new lab manual provide hands-on experience building database applications with modern technologies like Oracle®, MySQL®, and SQLServer®.

This Fifth Edition stays fresh with coverage of the latest, most popular database topics, including:

  • Mobile databases, GIS and Genome Databases under emerging applications
  • Database Security
  • A new chapter on Web script programming for databases using PHP

1.0 out of 5 stars hard going as student text book, 8 Feb 2005
By Neil Stevens (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Though this contains a good overview of database systems it is an extreamly complex and hard-to-read book. I studied 3 modules of learning about database systems while I was at university and the lecturer for every single one recommended this book.

If your looking for a book with a lot of clear diagrams and information on databases thats straight-to-the-point this isn't the book for you. A much better introduction to databases is "Database Systems: A Practical Approach to Design, Implementation and Management (International Computer Science S.)
Carolyn Begg, Thomas Connolly".

Whenever I read any part of this book it would make me more confused about the topic than I was already. If your a student and your considering buying this book I would definatly recommend getting it out your library first and seeing if you like the writing style before spending all that money on it.

For the beginers a very good book. It gives a high level database architecture of relational database. Good examples to follow the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book rocks!, 26 Nov 1998
By A Customer
It is a very good book for readers who have no prior knowledge of databases. The writers have arranged the chapters in a very systematic manner that enables you to gradually get a grasp of the subject. In fact the book would also prove good for readers who may have worked on DBMS softwares but not really knowing the "theory of databases". Excellent book for developing your database concepts - concepts that go a long way. A perfect book to be used as a text book in schools. The section on "Design Techniques" is something you would find yourself refering back to even when you're implementing real world systems.
