The Story of a Life by Aharon Applefeld is a breath-taking memoir of his childhood in Czernowitz when it was part of Rumania, then to when it passed to Soviet Ukraine in 1940, to its occupation by the Nazis. The story also deals with his family, the fate of the people and especially the Jews under the Germans, the fight for survival, the death camps and the liberation and of his adult life as he tries to reconcile with his horrible and haunting past.

I've just finished reading "Story of a life" in French - with difficulty and a dictionary - as it happens to be easier to get hold of in France (on almost any railway station bookstore) than it is in England, although it's been translated into English. A heartbreakingly powerful and lyrical, though sparse, account of the author's childhood and youth, from idyllic days in the Ukraine to the horrors of the Holocaust and through to settlement in Israel, it is humane and startling, even haunting. WHY is this work not properly marketed in the UK? It hits one in the guts and engages the brain. Appelfeld is truly one of the greats. I don't even want to insult this magnificent book with my plodding comments - just read it. I couldn't stop till I'd finished (at 4 am).
