4.0 out of 5 stars Reader Admires Writer, 11 Jan 2009
By John C. O'Kane (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
My memory of Harper Lee's book drew me to this title. However, I worried in case it would be heavy without being a good read. In the event, it stimulated and entertained and informed. I could have guaranteed the last, hoped for the second and was agreeably surprised by the first.

Not only did I enjoy reading this book, after a slow start on my part, I feasted on its many facts about Nelle(Harper Lee), her book and her world. When finished I felt like I had begun to know her and like her and that felt good.

I do not know how Charles Shields achieved this. I salute his skill and what he produced with it.

The pleasure of reading this book has finished but I am hopeful that it has initiated many moments of happy imaginings and, possibly, fruitful further searchings and explorations. I am glad this book was written.

You will like it, I think, if you find yourself fascinated by looking behind the often closed world of Deep South USA in the fifties, and if you are curious about the formative years and lives of persons who made a mark on the world that you admire. And, of course, it illuminates the book, To Kill A Mockingbird.
