5.0 out of 5 stars Heir of Mystery by Philip Ardagh, 7 Oct 2003
By A Customer
This was simply the best book EVER! Philip Ardagh's most recent trilogy, Unlikely Exploits begins with only a rather happy family then a very sad family, the Mcnallys.
The first book, The Fall of Fergal ends with Fergal falling quite a few feet out of a window to a certain death. Then in the second book they find a dog, named Fergal and it has his brain.Even though this book is extremely unrealistic it is a must read for all young teenagers with a sense of humour.
The book was magic because if you read the blurb, you read the first page, then you read the second page, next you read the first chapter, then the second, then you read up to the last page and now you feel like you are missing out on something wild so you read it again and again and again.
Philip Ardagh's books are very humourous indeed and they are a definite must read. This book makes your stomach rock!

4.0 out of 5 stars Best of the trilogy., 10 Mar 2006
Philip Ardagh's Unlikely Exploits are not as good as his Eddie Dickens books, but "Heir of Mystery" - the best of the three by miles - makes up for that. Drenched in horror movie atmosphere, with a truly weird villain and some brilliantly detailed locations (although the theme park is exhaustively described and then seldom used), it's the darkest book I've read of Ardagh's.

It's still a little brief, a problem which never came across with the Dickens books because they didn't take place over a few hours - "Heir of Mystery", like "The Fall of Fergal", feels as though it happens in real time. It makes the overall story feel a little disposable, but it's all so vivid and strange that it hardly matters. Still, it would have been nice if Ardagh made more of characters like Toby, Mulch and Wanda. Much like the sub-characters in "Fergal", he sets them up only to set them aside. The McNallys are great, but they need company...

It has a wonderful ending and, overall, feels less restricted than the first book. Again, it's not as much fun as "Awful End" and Ardagh concentrates a little too hard on breaking the harsh facts of life to his readers (the funeral scene drags a tad), but the end product is satisfying. Pity the third book goes and fiddles with it.
