5.0 out of 5 stars A SUPERB INTRODUCTION TO JAPANESE FOLKLORE AND LEGENDS, 13 Jul 2007
Lafcadio Hearn was one of the most prominent "orientalists" of the XIX century. After introducing his Western readers to the mysteries and exoticism of the African American tradition, he unveiled the secrets and mysteries of Japan. A Japan that was still almost unspoilt by foreign contact and whose legends and ghost tales Hearn translated and compiled in several books such as KAIDAN. These are delicate yet eerie stories that Hearn narrates with incredible subtlety and savvy. There is also a famous 1960s film by the same title inspired on this book and directed by Japanese film maker Kobayashi.

A beautiful collection of ghost stories that will delight all readers without distinction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weird, beautiful and affecting stories brilliantly told., 4 April 2009
By C. Esson "dub_wiser" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Lafcadio Hearn's style and sensitivity easily match all of the best modern translations of Japanese literature I've read. Either they've followed his example or he was way ahead of his time. This is a great little book with a wonderful selection of weird, beautiful and affecting stories.
