First Sentence
To most foreigners - and even to some romantic-minded Japanese - the term samurai conjures up an image of a fierce swordsman in bafflingly complex armour, proud and relentless in battle and ready to die - by his own hand, if necessary - in obedience to an unfaltering warrior code of honour. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Fascinating, 29 Jun 2005
This review is from: Samurai (Hardcover)
My dad bought this book for me a couple of years ago and it really opened my eyes. For those of you not familiar with the true nature of the Samurai I implore you to read this book. There are so many myths and falshoods attached to them that their exploits are constantly being misunderstood. I cannot praise this book highly enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for re-enactors and modellers of Samurai subjects, 13 May 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Samurai (Hardcover)
This gorgeously illustrated book feels somewhat like an expansion from Mitsuo Kure's previous work - The Samurai recreated in colour photograhs.

The book follows a similar format with many photos of re-enactors wearing copies of armour from the period being discussed. There is, however, a lot more detail in the text and even more photos to study.

For re-enactors there's thousands of little details that may help with the construction and wearing of kit. For modellers there's photos showing virtually every pose imaginable.

My only complaint is the relative lack of attention to the common troops. A massive amount of space is given over to the 'art' and 'treasure' types of armours, not enough to the the armour of those lower down the social scale. A lot of this can probably be explained by the festivals and gatherings where many of the photos come from.

This is a serious 'must buy' for anyone interested in recreating or modelling Japanese armours and equipment.

5.0 out of 5 stars fascinating a beautiful photographs of an exotic past, 18 Jan 2008
By P. Fox "le-renard" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
a fantastic historical resource with beautiful and numerous photographs of all the variations of costume and uniform from one era to the next. a good illustrators' or modellers' reference for the period.

it really brings home to you the majesty of a period in history captured in numerous volumes.

it owns a very prowd place on my bookshelf next to hagakure
