5.0 out of 5 stars Open your eyes and see past the specific style, 30 Oct 2004
This book is again a wealth of information for those martial artists who wish to see how a technique *could* be applied and to then discover more about their own art.

This is not about spoon-feeding a large number of techniques (there are far more than 75 applications for the down block) but about supplying readers with applications that can not only be found within the Karate katas, but the Tae Kwon Do Hyung, Poomse and Taeguk as well as Aikido and JiuJitsu.

Open you eyes, look past the applications shown and see what you can find it your own style. This book is designed to get people thinking for themselves rather than waiting for others to give them everything they need to know.

A valuable resource that is most certainly a welcome addition to my libryar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seeing many arts in one move, 30 Jul 2003
By Z. Dienes (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Rick Clark provides an excellent example of how a seemingly simple move from karate kata - the down block - can be used in a range of self defence situations, applying principles from kyusho waza (pressure points), jujutsu, striking arts, and also Filipino arts. Anybody interested in working out possible self defence meaning in their forms will find this book an inspiration. I will be returning to it many times myself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking and informative., 14 Jul 2003
By The Maverick (North Wales, UK) - See all my reviews
This book begins by giving some brief history of karate and other arts in general, talking about their evolution. Next, there is a very interesting part talking about Pareto's law and the most common attacks in an altercation, taking statistics from the FBI (though nevertheless would be just as valid in Britain).

The second part of the book shows 3-5 defences using the "down block" for each of these common attacks.

Although the descriptions are slightly unclear at times, this book would be a valuable addition to any martial arts library.
