5.0 out of 5 stars Personal zen poetry from the great zen master, 18 Oct 2000
By A Customer
A more personal side of Dogen is revealed through this evocative and moving collection. Depending on your own orientation, poetry and the arts can give more of a zen experience than reading more abstracted zen thinking. You don't have to be a zen monk in Japan to get into this - just have an open mind and heart. Dogen is more human here, to me anyway, and therefore more truly zen. His early orphanage and the relationship of the arts to religion are explored in a brief but fascinating introduction. Don't let anyone put you off this. If you love poetry or Dogen, you'll love this.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fit for a Monk, 7 Feb 2000
This book can only be appreciated by a Zen monk who lives in Japan - the poetry is subtle and clear - yet zen poetry is not just the words it is also the paper, the ink, the brush, the flow of the calligraphy - one would have to know Japanese and read the original of the poems.
