5.0 out of 5 stars Already a classic., 9 Sep 2000
By A Customer
This book, which has been available in Japanese for some years, has now been translated by Patrick McCarthy and has proved to be a classic already.

The stories of legendary 'bushi' such as Karate Sakugawa, Sokon Matsumura, Chotoku Kyan and Chokki Motobu are simply amazing and are almost unbelievable. When you combine these stories, however, with Grandmaster Nagamine's notes on how to perform proper zazen (seated meditation) you realise that O'Sensei Nagamine surely embraced the true art of 'karate-do' that we all strive to achieve.

If you were intrigued by the stories contained in 'The Essence of Okinawan Karate', you simply MUST buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Historical Work for ALL styles of Karate - A REAL Classic!!, 7 Feb 2007

There are only a small handful of karate history books like this around for example by the likes of Mark Bishop, John Sells, Patrick McCarthy and Bruce D. Clayton et al.

For me this has to be the best one. More so because Sensei Nagamine diligently went and interviewed as many of the great masters or their closest relatives & associates that he could (time was short!!).

Despite many valuable, ancient & historic documents being lost in Okinawa during raids in WWII, I am certain that this account of the founders of karate must be the closest & one of the most accurate yet.

Becoming a hard book to find now, but well worth the search & every penny. Why it is still not in re-print truly baffles me? A paperback version of this would be a best seller!! Are you listening Tuttle?

Like all the famous Bushi (Warriors) and buji before him, Sensei Nagamine has spent a lifetime perfecting his skills, honing his techniques & developing his true spirit to bring us the best out of karate and its true meaning.

Read this and go find your roots, maybe then you'll understand more about the art you've devoted yourself too. Also then perhaps then you'll realise that there's more to karate than just fighting, sparring & kicking, punching & grunting!!

This book was written by the late Grandmaster Nagimine. Founder of Matsubayashi Ryu. The style I practice. This books is for all martial artist whoes karate originate from the Ryukyu Islands. It is a history of great Karate Master's of the past. Book filled with tales and pictures that should be liked by student and historian alike. As usual, McCarthy does a good job translating for us westerners. A must read for all martial artist.
