The format of the book is to intoduce the simpler kanji first, and use sets of components which you learn before learning the associated kanji, thereby avoiding giving you kanji with unknown components. This allows you to create a stronger association between the character visually and its meaning, leaving the image much clearer in your mind. But if you want to use the book afterwards for looking up a kanji that you can't remember, then you would be much better off with a kanji dictionary or similar. Some other works have better facilities for looking up kanji, but most of the books that cover all of the every-day use (joyo) kanji are significantly more expensive than this. The stroke order numbering can also be confusing (the numbers are sometimes placed so that determining which line it refers to is difficult). If you want to quickly learn a core set of kanji that you can use, or want to be able to look up the kani you see rather than learn them all, then get another book. If, however, you want to learn the joyo kanji (something every serious student of japanese should aim to do), then this book could be of great assistance for your studies.

This book will:
Provide the vital role of letting you break down the parts of a kanji, making them easier to read, remember, and write.
Give similar looking Kanji next to each other to help you from getting muddled.

This book will not:
help you learn the readings of Kanji or what words they are used in - also making their meaning harder to understand.
Help you learn the most important or easiest Kanji first.
Provide a particularly fun or easy way to learn Kanji.
Work like a dictionary.
Give clear stroke orders.

So I recommend this book together with the Tuttle Flash cards, and and kanji dictionary like the Kanji Learner's Dictionary. No one of them alone will enable you to learn Kanji by themselves, but together they are fantastic.

This is a great book for learning the Joyo Kanji. It is well laid out and clear. The best of its kind. My only criticism is that some of the names it gives to its "graphemes" are just stupid. If the authors had looked at the character etymology I'm sure they could have come up with something more appropriate. It is worth buying Spahn and Hadamitsky's "Learners Kanji Dictionary" to go with it as the two books are cross-referenced for character compounds (The Nelson character dictionary is cross-referenced as well but Spahn & Hadamitsky is far superior).
