Product Description

Product Description

This dictionary provides 15,000 words that can be used in everyday conversation. It gives both Mandarin and Cantonese romanization and pronunciation, along with Chinese characters.

From the Author

Has general vocab + military & religious terms.
My book was originally published in 1970 in hardcover and was re-published in paperback in 1992. There have been 14 printings in total.

I have taught Cantonese and Mandarin in Taiwan, Hong King, and now the United States, since 1945. After years of requests by students I decided, in mid 1968, to write a comprehensive English to Chinese dictionary. Since many of my students at the time were in the military or were missionaries, this dictionary contains two additional sections with military and religious terms.

Presently I am working on a textbook which will be geared toward the business traveler who wishes to learn functional Mandarin quickly. It will have an emphasis on business, professional and entertainment terms, in addition to general vocabulary. One chapter will focus on the process and terms related to adopting a child from China and another discusses Chinese medicine. It is expected to be available by the fall of 1999.

2.0 out of 5 stars Do not live up to my standard, 4 April 1998
By A Customer
I have high hopes for this dictionary when I learned about this dictionary. I bought it because I wanted both Mandarin and Cantonese pronunciations. However, the book does not live up to my high standard. It has too few words to be useful to me. Even in the instance when the word do appear in the dictionary, sometimes I could not find what the phrase that I really wanted. Also, I found the pinyin (Mandarin translation) to be quite unconventional. Cantonese translation, however, is better than what I usually encounter in other books! Recommendation: Look for better dictionary elsewhere.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for Mandarin and Cantonese pronunciation., 22 Dec 1997
By A Customer
This dictionary's strong point is that it has both Mandarin pronunciation (bo-po-mo-fo and Yale romanization), and Cantonese for each word. There are also appendices on religious terms (apparently for use by missionaries) and military terms.

On the downside, the book appears to be from pre-WWII so newer terms are not present. Also, the definitions have no explanations or usage examples. The typeface for the Chinese characters is a serif style which makes it harder to read than it should be.

5.0 out of 5 stars very useful to learners of basic Cantonese, builds basic vocabulary, 11 Aug 2008

(REAL NAME)
If you are struggling, like me, to find a decent bilingual Cantonese dictionary, then this book will give you half of what you are looking for.
It is a one-way dictionary,English to Chinese & Cantonese.

I could not find a bilingual English - Cantonese, Cantonese-English dictionary that included the old Chinese characters.
So I decided to build up my Cantonese vocabulary using a one-way dictionary like this one, which seem easier to find.

This book lists the words in traditional Chinese characters, and not in the simplified characters now used in China.
These older traditional characters are still used in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Chinese communities outside of China (Indonesia, Malaysia etc), and of course in older Chinese documents.

This book has not been updated in a very long time so you will not find words such as Logistics and Stock Bonds.

This book uses the Yale system of romanization for pronunciation, but has an extensive reference section for translating it into Wade-Giles and Pinyin, and also Meyer-Wempe for Cantonese.

For Cantonese words, the letter H is put after the syllable to indicate low tones, for example ngH, which stands for the number five (5) is then pronounced as a low tone `ng`-sound.
This is quite familiar if you have previously worked with a book such as Teach Yourself Cantonese (Teach Yourself Cantonese (TY Complete Courses).

For the lack of other options available, this book is a good investment.
You can learn alot basic vocabulary from this book so it is well suitable to both basic and intermediate learners of Cantonese.
