2.0 out of 5 stars Far too long and tedious, 4 Sep 2000
By A Customer
This is a very long, drawn-out "whodunnit". The Victorian background is used almost to justify the inadequacies of the plot. There are many attempts to make the detective and other lead characters interesting and real, but they do not work, and only make the characters get in the way of the main story. It takes such a long time to get to the solution to the crime, and when you get there, it's unconvincing, and relies on too many coincidences.

If the book had been half-as-long, it might have been twice-as-good.

5.0 out of 5 stars How the fight for women's rights can lead to murder, 6 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: A Sudden Fearful Death (Hardcover)
A great book about the murder of a nurse colleague of Hester in the Crimean War. The suspense is kept until we know the terrible end. The murderer is above suspicion and the motive once again is related to the apparently innate hypocritical nature of victorian society. The drama of women's lives, poor or rich, and the cruel indifference towards their plight makes this book an extremely moving and powerful indictment perhaps even for our day.
