5.0 out of 5 stars Lovlily Produced Novelty Book, 18 Oct 2008
By chatvarin (England) - See all my reviews
The main reason for getting this is as a keepsake; although the colour plates by the Victorian watercolourist Harry Theaker are reproduced large and to a very high quality, they are jigsaws...and not exactly challenging ones. It is clearly produced with very young children in mind, but apart from the jigsaws themselves there is nothing here. The texts are excerpts accompanying each jigsaw puzzle, not simplified as in "The Nursery Alice", and introduced briefly to place the episode into the context of the plot, or more precisely plots, as episodes are taken from both books. There is appended a selection of poems from the books, but for the very young Carrollian poetic crafts may be quite inaccessible.

It is almost a boardbook but for the relatively flimsy hinge on the cover, which I imagine will fall apart under a child's handling. I cannot recommend at all this book for what it clearly is meant to be. Still, it is beautifully made. The binding design in particular is congenial with the full-colour edition of Macmillan's "Alice"s. Get it for the gloriously large reproductions of Theaker's plates.
