Product Description

"Easily the most significant book yet published on the Battle of the Little Bighorn."-Paul L. Hedren, Western Historical Quarterly "[Gray] has applied rigorous analysis as no previous historian has done to these oft-analyzed events. His detailed time-motion study of the movements of the various participants frankly boggles the mind of this reviewer. No one will be able to write of this battle again without reckoning with Gray"-Thomas W. Dunlay, Journal of American History "Gray challenges many time~honored beliefs about the battle. Perhaps most significantly, he brings in as much as possible the testimony of the Indian witnesses, especially that of the young scout Curley, which generations of historians have dismissed for contradictions that Gray convincingly demonstrates were caused not by Curley but by the assumptions made by his questioners ...The contrasts in [this] book...restate the basic components of what still attracts the imagination to the Little Bighorn."-Los Angeles Times Book Review "Gray's analysis, by and large, is impressively drawn; it is an immensely logical reconstruction that should stand the test of time. As a contribution to Custer and Indian wars literature, it is indeed masterful."-Jerome A. Greene, New Mexico Historical Review John S. Gray was a distinguished historian whose books included the acclaimed Centennial Campaign: The Sioux War of 1876. Custer's Last Campaign is the winner of the Western Writers of American Spur award and the Little Bighorn Associates John M. Carroll Literary Award.

5.0 out of 5 stars After reading this book, most of the mystery is gone., 6 Aug 1997
By A Customer
This has to be one of the best books written on the subject of the "Battle of the Little Big Horn." Using time motion analysis of Custers journey up the Rosebud to the final "last stand" resolves many of the mysteries of Custers' Last Stand. Some of the speculations may be refutable but I haven't seen a better analysis. This book left me with a favorable impression of Custer as a leader and a general. He may have been seeking glory at the beginning of the campaign but he wasn't an idiot when it came to the actual fighting and generalship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best, 28 April 2009
By Dr. R. K. Collins "Roger Collins" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
John Gray's masterpiece. This is not an easy book, the wealth of detail and the use of time/motion analysis make this book the most convincing study published up to that date. However the techniques used break up the narrative and may well confuse the reader new to the subject. New readers may well benefit from a book such as "Red Sabbath" for a good modern introduction to the battle prior to reading Gray's book for "main course".

Personally I found Gray's interpretation of the battle after Calhoun Hill a little thin, but as he suggested, hard evidence for the last stage of the battle is hard to come by.

Since Gray's book was published more archaeological evidence has been published and Greg Michno's excellent analysis of Indian accounts in "Lakota Noon" have lifted some of the fog from the last minutes of the battle.

For my money the best of the books I have read on the Little Bighorn, and highly recommended.
