5.0 out of 5 stars Dazzling wit, needle-sharp intellect, 20 Mar 2006

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Travesties, like Jumpers, is brilliant because it works at so many different levels. You could quite easily read it as a darkish comedy without understanding the historical or intellectual significance of the work - though those would add greatly to the impact.

In lesser hands, this could easily have turned into a stodgy drama, but here the material is never less than light and frothy, other than the deliberate use of an historical lecture. The dialogue is pungently sharp and the characters drawn with precision, despite their roles on Stoppard's intellectual chessboard.

Stoppard is truly a dazzling writer, one who can throw in the dimension of a performance of The Importance of Being Earnest into an historical and philosophical drama without dropping a single note.

At a time when Becket and Pinter have earned recognition (not to mention a Nobel Prize), it's time for a Stoppard retrospective - he is truly one of our greatest playwrites, worthy of comparison with the best.
