Product Description

Review

"The best version of Ovid's Metamorphoses available in English today... It is readable, alive, at times slangy, and actually catches Ovid's tone." -- Philadelphia Inquirer

"No one can deny the merits of Slavitt's version. His English hexameter is a great success -- a supple, fluid, and versatile medium that does Ovid's loosening of the Virgilian line full justice. And at his best he is very good indeed." -- Bernard Knox, New York Review of Books

Product Description

First published in 8 A.D. when he was 52, Ovid's epic poem contains profoundly entertaining tales of Adonis, Midas, Apollo, Icarus, and many others. (Poetry)

Bodies, I have in mind, and how they can change to assume new shapes-I ask the help of gods, who know the trick: inspire me now, change me, let me glimpse the secret and sing, better than I know how, of the world's birthing, the creation of all things from first to the very latest. Read the first page

4.0 out of 5 stars A well translated text of the poet's masterpiece, 6 Oct 2000

This review is from: Metamorphoses (Hardcover)
The Gods, it seems, are not a particularly pleasant bunch of people. I was fascinated at the number of stories I had heard during my life that originated from this book; from Icarus and his wings of wax to even a story in the very same lines as the Romeo and Juliet tragedy. What facinated me most were the explanations of how things came to be. For example, coral was seaweed that was turned to stone by the decapitated head of the Medusa! The very fact that I was able to grasp many of the story lines owes much to Slavitt's expert translation of a text which even to Roman society, must have been a laborious read. Some parts do tend to get confusing, however, but the stories of shape-shifters, centaurs and heroes is more than enough to compensate.
