It is an illustration of what can be achieved by historians who abandon over-cropped Prussia and Austria in favour of the still unexploited regions of the "Third Germany". The text provides a framework for what may be the next stage of German urban history: a recognition, through comparison, of urban diversity and an appreciation of this diversity withing the broader concept of cultural cohesiveness.
