Pretty much what I was hoping for, 20 Aug 2001

The first thing I noticed about this book was the size. I wasn't quite expecting such a big and heavy book. To me it was a pleasant surprise. I was very happy to see that most of the weight and size came from just what I was hoping for: breed profiles. There is very little space dedicated to anything else. There are dozens of books concerning the overall issues of owning a dog and it is quite alright that they are not considered in this one. Okay, about the breed profiles then. First of all, the book introduces a great variety of breeds, way beyond the limited list of breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club. There are several pictures of each breed and for the most part, they are very beautiful. Most of the puppy pictures are just adorable! The information provided for each breed is divided under four headlines: Description; Owner Suitability; Growth, and Health. "Description" offers a verbal portrait of the looks of the breed. This section is not all that important in my opinion - except, of coarse, for the crucial information on the height and weight of the dog. "Owner Suitability" describes the temperament of the breed and the type of living conditions it requires to be happy. This section could have been more thorough. After all, the temperament of a family dog is always the most important feature it has. "Growth" provides information on the development of the particular breed from a puppy towards adulthood. In some cases this section adds to what wasn said in the previous section ("Owner Suitability"). Also a few hints to what type of puppy a buyer should be looking for are given here. A very interesting chapter. "Health" deals with, surprise, surprise, health problems in the breed. A very important chapter to read. In general the information provided for a certain breed does not go into much depth - the information under each headlines always includes only one paragraph. It is my opinion that when trying to find the ideal breed people should always consult more than one book. Like all breed books, this alone does not provide enough information when picking a breed, but it does offer good guidelines. It is a good book alongside with other dog books when trying to decide on the right breed and, in my opinion, definitely worth buying.
