5.0 out of 5 stars A very good reference book, 10 May 1999
By A Customer
This is an excellent book for its price, as it describes over 500 fish species both common and rare in the aquarium hobby, each one with its own colour picture, description and lots of details on special conditions (water, pH, feeding requirements etc). There is also the interesting section 'Why Fish?' which leads on to the instructions on setting up your own aquarium. Included are feeding, disease, spawning and general care chapters and a long, informative description of aquarium plants.

When I have a query about my own aquarium at home this is the first book I look to (out of my fish library of over 20 books) and is probably my best aquarium book. A helpful index has both common and scientific names (including the older names of species that have been re-classified) of fish as well as a plant index. All this in one handy book, with odd bits of Dr Axelrod's amusing anecdotal wisdom thrown in make me recommend this book highly to any aquarist.

5.0 out of 5 stars I like it, 26 Feb 2004
By A Customer
I just bought this book for the second time .I don't need any more the information about the plants and <<getting set up>> that book contain but still covers my needs for information about fish as it contains all the species I might encounter at a pet store and more.
If you are searching to buy your first book, this is the one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing special
Didn't like this book much.

First off, the physical format is rather cumbersome -- the book is about 20cm x 15cm, and about 10cm thick, making it a heavy, unstable brick that... Read more
