This is a very serious work by Practical Fishkeeping magazine goldfish correspondent Dr Joe Smartt, designed for the very experienced and committed goldfish breeder. It's in no way a basic guide to goldfish breeding, but is fascinating none-the-less. The history of goldfish and goldfish varieties is thoroughly covered, as are the modern varieties, and their show standards. The illustrations, from various sources but mainly the skilled hand of Australian goldfish breeder Merlin Cunliffe are fascinating. The second half of the book goes very deeply into goldfish genetics, starting with basic genetic principles and working through to what these mean for goldfish breeders and for specific strains of goldfish, and undesirable genetic defects. So, if you are really serious about breeding the perfect goldfish, you will probably find this book invaluable. But you'll need to be serious - this isn't an easy read - and it isn't a cheap book. One of the few in-depth academic fishkeeping works in recent years.
