5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to musical harmony for all musicians, 6 May 2001
By John Aldam (Woodbridge, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Highly readable if you want to understand and apply musical harmony in a wide range of musical genres. Acts either as tutotial or as reference from beginners to fairly advanced. Covers all the interesting aspects for non-experts. Explains the difference between major do-re-mi and minor scale, plus why pentatonic major and minor scales make improvising easier. Explains how you can derive from a melody line first a series of chords then harmonised parts, how to find the key centre in a chord sequence, blues harmony, blues melody, blues rhythm, chord inversions, sevenths, ninths, modes, melodic minor scale, tension and resolution, flattended fifths, modulation and lots more! Brilliant!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good theory for the improving musician, 13 July 2002
This book has some great exercises and some neat tricks to help memorise aspects of music theory. It's nicely paced, starting very basic and going to reasonably advanced. I would have awarded more stars but for three flaws: (i) some aspects are poorly explained - the authors knew what they meant but had difficulty expressing it unambiguously, (ii) some of the answers to the exercises are wrong (B# does not equal Cb, despite what this book says!) which does not help if you are just starting out, and (iii) there is little differentiation between what is useful theory and what is obscure. However, given that you take those caveats on board, I would still recommend this book for its accessability and well structured approach.

5.0 out of 5 stars If your serious about music and guitar then make a purchase!, 24 Nov 2009
If your serious about music and guitar then make a purchase!
I was advised to buy this book so I did and it's brilliant! It teaches you every step about music theory and harmony to help you understand the formation of guitar and the music language in general! If you're a beginner it might seem a bit daunting at first when you see the thickness of the book BUT it uses a methodical layout which eradicates that. So when you think 'oh wait how am I going to remember this!', it gives you a strategy of how to remember it so you can put it into practice! It never jumps and makes things vague, which I find quite a few music books or 'how to play guitar' books do! This really gives you the opportunity to go from strength to strength so when you have completed the book you become more of an all rounded musician/guitarist and as a beginner sets a strong foundation of understanding music theory and harmony!
