1.0 out of 5 stars How NOT to record, 20 Dec 2000
By A Customer
It's only 60 pages so that should give you an idea to it's LACK of depth! There are three good sections, the half page on psychology, the EQ chart (although they never work), and SOME of the five "P" rules. "Having a plan" is its best tip - so now you've saved yourself eight pounds! What sort of plan? The book never really says! Overall the book is too superficial for a beginner and not advanced enough for someone with ANY experience. There is no set-up diagram, no proper explanation of a mixer, only 1 paragraph explanations of each effect (pathetic) and no attempt to be artistic or technical. This book is for "someone", but I have no idea who!?...

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Primer for Absolute Beginners, 23 Feb 2005
If you've been doing sound for even a short while, you're bound to have been asked by somebody "can you teach me how to do sound?". The question is far to general to answer...so THIS is the book I throw at them.

Written in a sort of "Computers for Dummies" style, this provides a VERY basic introduction to all aspects of sound recording and mixer. Is it enough to create an instant expert? Nope, but it doesn't claim to. Does it give you enough to understand what each link in a basic audio chain does and probably set up a simple school or Amdram event? Yup! Although basic, the engineering info provided is accurate and can serve as a springboard to further research and reading. But be warned...the next stages will require maths and engineering to take things farther.

If you've already done some sound, go for more detail...if you've just been told you have to do sound and the next show and have never touched a mic or mixer...this is the one for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars good grounding in audio recording and engineering techniques, 30 April 1999
By A Customer
An excellent book for those with a little prior knowledge of music wishing to learn the art of recording and live mixing. Many aspects of setup and troubleshooting covered, without becoming too technical and with a good dose of humour. The author obviosly does a lot of sound engineering within churches and his coverage of live mixing reflects this.(!) On the whole, these techniques can be modified for most venues but it does seem a strange context in music terms.
