I read this book on a series of train journeys between London Waterloo and the South Coast of England. I found it profoundly inspiring. Seyyed Nasr, drawing heavily on Schuon, lays out a conception of knowledge closer to Socrates and Plato in style, the idea of a tradition of 'wisdom' that has largely gone underground in the West since the renaissance but is seeing a revival of sorts in recent times.

This books draws heavily on Islam but there is very little proselytising. It does not patronise either.

I would recommend it to anyone who has wondered whether the orthodox reading of the progress of knowledge ( usually identified with scientific knowledge ) is largely a distortion of Western ( inc. Islamic ) intellectual history.
