Product Description

Synopsis

This volume seeks to lay the groundwork for readers who want to understand the general functions of loudspeaker enclosure systems and eventually experiment with their own designs. Written for design engineers and technicians, students, and intermediate-to-advanced acoustics enthusiasts, it presents a general theory of loudspeaker enclosure systems. Featuring illustrated and numerical examples, the book examines diverse developments in enclosure design, and studies the various types of enclosures as well as varying parameter values and performance optimisation. Topics examined include: the synthesis of vented systems; infinite-baffle and closed-box systems; electro-acoustical relations; and reflex response relationships.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mathematical models of some common loudspeaker systems, 23 Feb 2001
By A Customer
This book is, in effect, a series of applied mathematical papers directed at modelling loudspeaker drivers and enclosures. Therefore a reader will need an understanding of engineering mathematics at degree level in order to understand the contents. The book makes extensive use of analogue systems modelling techniques, advanced calculus and high order (greater than third order) Laplace transform polynomials to achieve its ends.

A model of a typical loudspeaker driver is derived and employed in conjunction with various enclosure models. Response graphs are derived and plotted for a comprehensive array of useful real-world parameters. Issues relating to practical implementation - called 'synthesis' in the text -are discussed and measurement of actual physical parameters used in the mathematical development is also described in sufficient detail.

Enclosure types including sealed and reflex enclosure are covered. The analysis could be extended to other configurations, e.g. coupled cavity, quite easily. Horn-loaded and transmission-line systems are not explicitly covered and may not respond to this type of analysis. Perhaps these could be covered in a further volume? I would certainly buy such a volume based on my experience of this book.

If the maths doesn't put you off, it does cover a huge amount of the basic knowledge on this subject. No doubt there are academic works which can top it for detail in some areas but they are not listed on any of the book lists I use.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a practical loudspeaker design text., 16 May 2001
By A Customer
This book consists of a collection of three papers from the late 1960s and early 1970s, they are very mathematical.

There is little explanation of how to actually design and build loudspeaker enclosures.
