2.0 out of 5 stars Get a move on, please, 11 Sep 2002
By A Customer
The best things about this book are the bright graphics, the breezy writing style, and the simple language used to explain the concepts.

However, I got very frustrated that the majority of the book was a Jackanory about telephones and how Bell beat someone else to the patent. The actual 'meat' of the topic was, in comparison, very hurriedly dealt with. I felt it covered Networks in a very superficial way. The authors seemed to run out of steam after Ch6.

So this is a great book to catch your initial flavour of what's involved in networks, but it certainly does not contain enough detail to help you for even the most rudimentary study in networks. This is a great pity, as I feel this could have been a great learning aid had the book dealt with networks the way it did the telephone!

Finally, I was irritated by the poor quality of the book - many pages were not even divided at the top, which meant that many tore as I opened the book, new from its cellophane wrapper. This means I cannot sell it on. Beware!

4.0 out of 5 stars To learn important materials about networks in easiest way., 12 Jun 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: How Networks Work (Paperback)
This book uses lots of graphics which makes it easy and fun to tackle such an important subject. Learning about the history of the industry is also another positive aspects of the book. At the end of the book you find yourself familiar with lots of materials which is quite useful to get into advanced phase of learning about networks.

1.0 out of 5 stars If I could give it zero stars I would., 12 May 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: How Networks Work (Paperback)
If I wanted a history lesson of telecommunications, I would have bought a book on it. I thought I would be learning about networks, which you eventually do after 6 or so chapters of worthless history. I could care less how the telegraph impacted the modem. To the authors of this book...keep the history lesson and stick to the task at hand writing and introductory book on networks. If you have any knowledge about networks, I wouldn't even waste my money. On a positive note this book is a tremendous cure for insomnia.

The trouble with a lot of basic introduction books is they often take a beating from people who know the background and basics of a subject already. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME
The whole series actually kicks ass...and is well worth the energy spent reading, for those who are beginners or just need refreshing.
