This exam measures the ability to design, write, and understand programs written in language version 1.4 of the Java 2 Platform. The programmer¿s exam concentrates on the language basics. The engine offers two study modes, Practice Test and Flash Review, full exam customization, and a detailed score report.

The printed content of this book is adequate, although it does presume a fairly advanced knowledge of Java. Information on the various topics is quite condensed and explanations are brief, which may be problematic for someone without solid Java programming experience.

However, I was a bit annoyed with the marketing of the Preplogic exams package which is included with this book. Firstly, the synopsis doesn't mention that the CD only runs on Windows OS. Secondly, the CD only contains a Preview Edition of the Preplogic package, which amounts to one set of questions. Again, I'm sure the synopsis did not clarify this. I was expecting more.

I use this book regularly, before going for job interviews.

It's common these days to be given a written exam or test as part of the interview. These tests often quiz you on method signatures and various Java conventions. You may have used Java for many years, relying on code completion and google for reference - if that's the case, and if you're anything like me you'll probably make a lot of silly mistakes in these interview exams. (For me, this seems particularly true of the threading questions.)

This book has been a fabulous help to me. I use the mock exam on the CD to revise every time I get into the interview cycle.
