Amazon.co.uk Review
An official Macromedia title,
Advanced ColdFusion 5 Development is a detailed, substantial guide to using this server-side technology for sophisticated, large scale web applications. It is aimed at professionals and knowledge of the product is assumed. The principal author, Ben Forta, is well known and respected in the ColdFusion community and is Macromedia's senior product evangelist. Here he is joined by ten other specialists, some from Macromedia and others from independent companies.
The book is divided into four parts. The first covers high availability, and describes a variety of techniques including load balancing, clustering, replication, and RAID database servers. It is excellent at discussing the pros and cons of each approach, providing the resources for making informed decisions. The next part is about security, covering SSL, authentication and authorisation. Part 3 is longer, and explains a number of advanced application techniques such as regular expressions, XML, exchanging data with WDDX, internationalisation, and integrating with directory services. The last part is about extending ColdFusion, and tackles key topics such as custom tag authoring in C++ or Java, user-defined functions, communication with COM and Java, and scripting ColdFusion Studio. Detailed appendices provide a reference for VTML, WIZML, used to customise ColdFusion Studio, and the ColdFusion Studio Object Model.
Advanced ColdFusion 5 Development is well-focused, detailed, authoritative, and a must-have for advanced ColdFusion developers. --Tim Anderson
