Product Description

Web Site Design Goodies starts by asking, "Who is your site for?" and "Why should someone come to your site?" Once readers have answered those questions, the author takes them through essential web site creation issues, including:

  • Deciding on a Server
  • Planning your site ahead of time
  • Text and Navigation
  • Images and visual issues
  • Communicating with visitors

The final chapters cover advanced concepts including site promotion and adding the latest web tricks - in ways that make sense.

Throughout the book, Joe critiques actual, published web sites, demonstrating the techniques that worked -- and the ones that didn't. Many of these sites will be pictured in a special 4-color section of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unlocks your creative genius., 5 Feb 2002
Like many people, I quake with fear when faced by a blank page, or screen, on which I must bring something to life. I have several books already which teach me the mechanics of building a web site. The missing element in all of them is design. This book takes the fear out of designing an attractive and creative site.

Most books progress from easy to difficult, in stages. This book starts with what, in the author's opinion, are the most important design elements and progresses by stages to the least important. This in no way detracts from any of the areas covered. However, the author feels if you can only cover part of the book, then do it in order of importance. In this way, after even three chapters, you can have a site sufficiently stunning to go on line. By working your way through the book, refining as you go, you could be winning awards.

The greatest emphasis is on the placement of your logo and banner. Next come your links. The importance of the ability of visitors to read your site is stressed and is achieved by the use of suitable background colours and complimentary text.

A novel and vital part of the book are the reviews presented in each chapter which illustrate the points covered in each chapter. The sites chosen by the author are by amateurs. Three sites are reviewed in each chapter. The strong points are praised, those elements which could do with improvement are then pointed out and helpful suggestions offered. The author is carefully to stress that while something doesn't work in one site, it might work in another. He does not give "rules". He shows examples where doing the opposite of what is normally reccommended, can lift a mediocre site well above normal.

I would suggest visiting each of the sites reviewed to see how they look. While the colour plates, and the screen shots give a good idea, nothing beats the computer screen. The URLs are all provided. Visiting the author's web site is very helpful, too.
