Amazon.co.uk Review
When a program reaches version 8, and a book its fifth edition, somebody is doing something right. In the case of Special\ Edition: Using Director 8, both Macromedia and Gary Rosenzweig are doing the right things by improving the popular multimedia c\ reation tool and the means to learn how to use it.

Director 8 has numerous new features, building on its already vast feature list\ . While Macromedia's manuals are good, a book like this really helps get a beginning to intermediate user up to speed, and introduce\ s new features to experienced users. A short summary lists the new features in the introduction, but they are also highlighted throu\ ghout the course of the book via "New To..." sidebars.

Whether you are new or old to Director, Special Edition: Using Director \ 8 is a concise and complete reference. Broken down into 11 main sections, starting with "Director Basics" through "Basic Lingo",\ "Authoring in Director", "Using Director to Create Professional Applications", and on to "Advanced Topics", which includes creating\ Java applets, this massive volume is well documented and illustrated. Filled with sidebar tips, code snippets, and screen shots, it\ explains virtually all Director 8 features in detail.

As an added bonus, the CD-ROM includes two complete and complex unprotected\ Director projects, just waiting to be examined, poked, prodded and otherwise reverse-engineered. Of course, the CD-ROM also contain\ s a vast array of other goodies, like a trial version of Director 8, a sprite library for creating animation, and most of the files \ and projects used throughout the book.

If you have never used Director before, this may not be the right book for you. Although it\ does start with some basic features, it goes through them quickly. But if you have some experience in it, or are looking to get up \ to speed, this handsome reference is money and time well spent. --Mike Caputo

5.0 out of 5 stars Goes into detail what the Macromedia books don't mention, 6 Feb 2001
By A Customer
To be fair, there are so many things about Director that one book would never be enough. Even Macromedia themselves don't seem to manage it. However what the help files and supplied manuals don't mention, you will probably find in this book. It isn't ideal for beginners, the official "Director 8 - Demystified" is better for them. I found that with this book, no other was necessary. It doesn't replace the usefulness and content of the help files, but it does cover what they lack, making it a great compliment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great all rounder -especially good for Director newbies, 7 Nov 2000
By A Customer
So many computer books pride themselves on shouting at you the reader with back cover blurb stating how they're so easy to understand and you'll be up and running in no time at all when the reality is they assume far too much, greet you with a barrage of techno babble and patronise your now bemused wits with endless waffle and I'm your buddy writing style.

I have to stress this book doesn't fall into this marketing trap - it even classes iteself as a book best suited to the intermediate to advanced user which is underselling its usage because it's as easily suited to the novice as well.

I think because the author Gary Rosenzweig has both a computer science and a journalistic background and his own confession that he knows Director so well that it's written in a style that takes you through Director's capabilities in such a way that you could use the software for extended presentations or be more adventurous and take it to its true potential as a web games tool, an offline interactive CD-Rom tool or whatever. It's the sort of book that you could if so desire read cover to cover but one better served as a great book to dip in and out of relevant sections whenever warranted.

I find myself continually referring to sections to brush up on techniques, check possible solutions to more complex problems, or just to listen to an expert in the field. If you like this then check out Gary's other books especially ones like Advanced Lingo for games...

Let's hope Gary brings out a new book when the 3d functionality of Director and Shockwave comes into its own. On a final note - if you're a student looking for course books then this should be the one you invest in as... it has a definite advantage considering the amount of material you're treated to. A definite must Director reference book if you want to put Director through its paces. Having said that it's not a book that you can plough through quickly, but great if you want to explore Director indepth. I'd say this is a plus because all too often Director is assumed to be nothing more than an elaborate presentation tool when it's got so much more to offer especially since Shockwave is an abundant format for interactive web browsing. Buy it !
