Product Description

Product Description

Practical Visual C++ takes a straight forward, no-nonsense approach to teaching C++. You start by learning the basics of Developer Studio with the use of the Wizards, editors, and debuggers. Then move on to the core language, including program flow, data types, functions, classes, object-oriented programming, and more. You then progress into the Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC), the libraries of pre-build classes that Microsoft provides to make Visual C++ programming much easier. By understanding how to use the classes within MFC, you will be able to create nearly any type of program. Specific coverage includes working with dialogs, objects, controls, document-views, file manipulation, and printing.

4.0 out of 5 stars quite good for a beginner, 8 Mar 2004
By Johnny (London) - See all my reviews
I found this book to be a good introduction between theory and Practice. It is an excellent stepping stone to go on to a more difficult book such as "Programming Windows with MFC" by Jeff Prosise. The chapters are nicely presented, well written and structured. You get the feeling that the authors thought about the work well in advance before writing it. The side notes are on each page are informative.

However, just be warned that they do not cover:
ADO (just the older ODBC technology available through the wizards) Multitasking, DLLs, static Link libraries, Network communications and internet applications, ATL, Automation. I suppose including these topics might make the book too long but SOME of these topics are covered in similar introductory texts such as "Teach yourself Visual C++ in 21 days (not recommend though!)" and "Beginning MFC Programming" Ivor Norton. Hence 4 stars...

Still, I still recommend the book heartly but expect to buy another book such as Prosise's one pretty soon

Finally the authors are Jon Bates and Tim Tompkins and not 'David Hamilton' as Amazon has written. Also be aware that the book "Practical Visual C++ 6.0" is exactly the same. Don't buy both :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good introduction to Visual C++, 28 Aug 2003
Coming from a C/Java background, I was a bit daunted by the prospect of going back to something which is a mess at the best of times, but which, in the hands of Microsoft, has become something of a beast. I had problems with other books because they _force_ you to read everything and do all of the examples (because the killer app you make in chapter 182 is based on everything in the previous 181, for example).

This book takes you from knowing just enough about C++, the language (i.e. that it has things called classes, and you can do stuff with them), and it takes you to being able to stand on your own two feet and produce windows C++ applications.

The last few chapters (on COM, ACTIVEX and DIRECTX) could have been a good deal meatier, and I hope in the next version they are expanded. The book loses a star because there are many opportunities to explain _why_ something is the way it is, or to show some more detail to the reader by expanding laterally on the chapter topic, but the author cites lack of time and space and does not explain them. This is a shame, because it is this kind of 'fringe' information which you have to just pick up over time, that would save a lot of people a lot of time.

The reliance on MFC means that you don't get much base-windows programming, but that may be a good thing :)

If you were like me, programming-competent, but C++-phobic, this book is definitely for you. I'd recommend getting hold of the C/C++Programmers Refernce from Osborne as well though.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Step by Step Approach to Creating Successfull Applications, 22 Jan 2002
Practical Visual C++ 6 is for people who have a copy Visual C++ 6 and have been fairly-familier with C and like me wish to expand, and learn the correct methods that create a Visual c++ version of an application.
This is not ment to teach you the C++ language(although it does inadvertantly along the way as you work through the projects) but more the ways to impliment your ideas in Microsoft Visual C++ version 6. Teaching you how to create dialog boxes, use and create the range of buttons available in windows application. Event creating/handling ie button onClick , onDoubleclick and onChange events etc.
You'll be moving on to creating your own Sub-Classes by the 5th chapter enableing you to perform some nifty extra functions to text entry in your own projects.
Good clear detailed and concise.
well worth it with 847 pages 28 chapters...
