3.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad effort considering..., 13 Dec 1999
I got this book as an easy way into Java, and, by and large it's OK. As an experienced programmer I read the book in a day and took in about 85-90% which is about right for a first read. Knowing C, Windows API and OOP made it easy for me to follow, but I guess inexperienced readers might start sweating early on. Nevertheless the writers chirpy style and the thankfully simple examples encourage the reader to get involved, which is more than I can say for a lot of language guides, which insist upon proving to you that the author can, if required, develop a Nuclear Power Station control system at the drop of a hat. A good intro. Now for the reference manuals...

4.0 out of 5 stars good for beginners, 3 Sep 1999
By A Customer
The last programming language I learned was BASIC, and I wanted to wet my feet in something before I took a Sun certified course in Java. This served very well to pass along some of the fundamental concepts and terminology. The examples worked and with a bit of study and monkeying with the code I was able to figure out why when the text got a bit over my head. I'm no seasoned programmer, but I feel this was a good jolt to get me going.
