Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
The problem with the Microsoft Windows 2000 family of operating systems is that they were designed by techies, for techies. Networks built around Windows 2000, with Server in the back room and Professional on everyone's personal machine, are reliable, secure, and easy to manage. Which does you precisely no good if you're not a technical person but you just want to figure out how to print to the colour printer in the other room without waiting all day for the Network Person to get to your cube. Special Edition Using Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional can help you out. It explains the workings of Windows 2000 Professional in no-nonsense terms that, while dry, will allow you to get the computer stuff out of the way as soon as possible, so you can get back to your real work. It's not a bad reference if you happen to be the Network Person either, as a matter of fact.

Like the other books in this series, this large volume combines background text (which explains, to cite two examples, printer naming conventions and local area network operating principles), followed by no-frills procedures. This book, unlike most of its series mates, includes troubleshooting flow diagrams to help you pinpoint trouble. Do you see such-and-such a condition? If so, try this. If not, check for this other symptom. The troubleshooting trees go on like that, helping inexperienced problem solvers check the right things and preventing experienced engineers from missing details. The flow diagrams are a great addition to a respected format. --David Wall

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Windows 2000 Book Out There, 25 Mar 2001
By TERRENCE MORGAN (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is incredible value. It's slightly cheaper than most other W2K books (e.g. Mastering Windows 2000 by Mark Minas), it's BIG (c 1500 pages), and most importantly it's highly informative.  The authors explore almost every part of Windows 2000 in great depth (Unlike the Mark Minas effort where I had to plough through half the book to get beyond the basics).
But the most incredible thing about this book is the enclosed CD. It has Special Edition Using Windows 98 (1000 pages), Special Edition Using Office 2000 (1500 pages) and Special Edition Using Linux (900 pages) in Acrobat PDF format included on it. Not a few sample pages, THE WHOLE BOOKS!!
Your getting 4 for the price of 1!!
A fantastic bargain.
5 Stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvellous one-stop resource for Windows 2000 Pro, 31 Oct 2001
By rkcoggy@hotmail.com (Coventry, England.) - See all my reviews
As a long time Windows user, from the 3.1 days of yore, I only recently dipped my toe into the pool of Windows 2000. For years I have been using the "home" versions of Windows, favouring DirectX compatibility over stability, but Windows 2000 came along, so I decided it was time to give reliability a try.

But it is SO different!

If you are used to Windows 95/98se (I don't count Me because it barely made it out the box before XP came along) then there is going to be a lot in 2000 that completely stumps you. With different terminology and more advanced "everything", you won't know where to start poking the proverbial stick at first.

This book helped me immeasurably. I can now fly round Win 2000, like I can 98. For as long as 2000 graces my system, I shall never have this book too far from my desktop's reaching distance.

2.0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTE Beginner?, 15 Mar 2002
By A Customer
If you are at amazon.co.uk and browsing the net, then this book is not for you. Half of the book deals with teaching such BASIC things. But if u haven't seen a Windows PC before EVER, then go ahead and buy this book.
