I have been trying to learn c++ for some time now, and until now i have been using a variety of 'books for dummies', and i hadn't got very far. I though that id give this book a try, and its probaby the most seful book i have ever read. details are explained slowly, s,low enough to grasp well, but not too slow for you to lose interest, and it covers everything that you could possibly need to know about the language. amazing..... buy it!

I have been trying to get into C or C++ for a while now having learnt enough to program in pascal reasonably well. I thought the jump would be very difficult, but it isn't! I'm sure someone with no programming experience could pick up this book and complete it from start to finish with little problem. The book is very well paced and does not hang around when teaching you the basics, the author could have spent 50 pages telling you about every conceivable way to write a 'hello world' program but instead concentrates in building up your skills quickly, leaving you free to experiment whilst maintaining your interest (who wants to spend an hour typing in a different program for every different kind of variable you get? Very boring). The chapters are short and concise with plenty of info and diagrams for reference, there is nothing worse than having to read 30+ pages of text for one chapter. If you are debating whether or not to learn c or c++, i would go straight for C++ and this book, i had c for dummies volume 1 and i read over 200 pages to finish the 3rd chapter about variables. It was too much effort to do a chapter a day and i was confused by the end of it. Idiots C++ gets you going in around 36 pages just as well. I cant recommend this book highly enough, i just had to write in and tell you to stop looking and start coding!

(p.s. the book also comes with a cdrom which has three bonus chapters, advanced file handling, reusable code and headers. Unbelieveable!)

An excellent well-structured text for anyone who has no prior programming experience - the core C++ concepts are explained in simple terms that are easy to follow. Snaith also has a non-technical style of writing that will appeal to novices (like me). My only criticisms are that the book is sometimes excessively simplistic (even for a "Complete Idiot"), and there is little emphasis on testing the reader's knowlege (i.e. example questions). Overall, the book is a good way to get into a potentially dry subject.
