Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Most computer users reach a point at which they're generally familiar with computers and able to get work done with them, but lack the depth of knowledge needed to make computer use really productive and fun. The Unofficial Guide to PCs represents a boost to these "perpetual intermediates". It's packed full of important knowledge and valuable tips that you can use to take full control of your computer.

This book doesn't waste time on mouse tutorials--it dives right into the productivity tricks of experienced users. Users will find easy-to-implement changes that really improve the usefulness of programs used all the time. For example, you'll learn how to get nine recently used files--rather than the standard four--to appear at the bottom of Microsoft Word's File menu.

There's a lot of hardware coverage, too. Though the authors helpfully provide an apples-to-apples comparison of many Intel processors, they neglect to cover anything newer than the Pentium II Xeon 450 (including the entire Pentium III family) and advise against buying AMD and Cyrix chips without explaining why. Aside from that, The Unofficial Guide to PCs is a winner. --David Wall

Topics covered: Tweaking Windows 98 to meet users' needs, performing scheduled backups, getting answers from the Internet, setting up simple workgroups that enable printer and file sharing, and hardware comparisons.

Synopsis

An objective guide on how to get the most out of a PC. This work provides concepts, tips and tricks in note-style paragraphs in a visual format, with which readers can skip from one key task to the next.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is such a great book!, 25 Nov 1999
By A Customer
This is such a great book I hope the authors keep it under revision to update the technology. I found the content easy to use and keep it as a ready reference to check the TUGPC point of view. Any computer sales person in their right mind will have this within reach if they really want to help a customer make a sound decision on "Unbiased" technical information.

3.0 out of 5 stars A useful book but very basic., 13 Oct 1999
By rfield@pavilion.co.uk (Brighton, England) - See all my reviews
This is a well written book but really aimed at PC users who have very little experience. It tends to be rather superficial and fails to take the reader much beyond the level of some very simple magazines. It is however very friendly. It assumes very little previous knowledge and is ideal for those needing information which goes a little beyond the standard Windows manual. I was disappointed wth the book, but very impressed with the efficient way Amazon dealt with my first ever order!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for new Windows 9x computer owners, 23 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Whether you've put off moving up from a Windows 3.1 machine, haven't owned a computer before, or want more information about using Windows 95/98 and working with common packages, this book is a tremendous resource. It distills the years of experience the authors have had with Win9x and presents general methods to use when purchasing your computer, fixing hardware and software conflicts, and working with applications. It also contains a good set of web sites as starting points for learning more.

Win9x experts probably won't gain much from this book. However, they're not the intended audience, and I wholeheartedly believe The Unofficial Guide to PCs is well worth the price for any new Windows user.
