Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

How Computers Work is a sort of picture encyclopedia illustrating the various technologies that make up the computer on your desk. It will appeal to anyone who's curious about how a disk drive stores a word processing document, what is actually happening when your PC runs through its lengthy startup process, how a modem transmits data, or how a sound card turns your voice into a data file.

You could of course lead a long and productive computing life without ever knowing how data moves across the Internet, what happens when a computer is connected to a network, or what RAM is. You might have no interest in how fonts work, what's laser about a laser printer, or how e-mail moves your messages around the globe. You could still have a computer and not know what SCSI is, how a scanner scans, or how your graphics adapter creates accelerated 3-D graphics. And sure, you may have been blasting away at tanks without knowing how that force-feedback joystick works. But where's the fun in that?

How Computers Work focuses primarily on the IBM-compatible PC and its peripheral products. Because much of this technology exists on the Mac and other platforms, Mac users might be a little unsatisfied at being excluded. Otherwise, this handsomely illustrated book of PC technology has something for every computer user. --Amazon.com

Absolutely brilliant!!, 12 Dec 2000

By A Customer

As a college student learning the fundamentals of computer workings, I cannot praise this book enough. It covers many, many aspects of computing, and all the explanations are clear, concise, and very very helpful, with extremely nice illustrations to boot. Although it doesn't go into as much detail as some knowledgable reviewers/computer bods would like, it IS classed as a Beginner - Intermediate book, and as such excels in almost every area. I would not hesitate to recommend this wonderful book to anyone who may wish to learn about 'how computers work'.

3.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and easy to read. Very simplified, 5 Nov 2001
This book is great for getting an overview of how PCs work. Pretty, colourful but very simplified illustrations. It's not suitable for a serious hardware enhusiast, but great for beginners, the curious etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear and concise, 29 Jan 2001
By julian_sinclair54@yahoo.co.uk (Barnstaple, Devon, England) - See all my reviews
Brilliant combination of clear thinking and excellent diagram support. An unbeatable way into the world of hardware and software. Too many books written by those who know plenty, but cannot communicate it effectively. Ron White does not appear to suffer from this problem.
