Using Visual J++ 6.0 demonstrates all of the new features of Visual J++ 6.0. The book is divided into 6 main sections, allowing Java developers of all levels (beginners to advanced) to increase their programming abilities.

Section 1: "Fundamentals of Programming with Visual ++" contains 7 chapters that introduce you to Visual J++ 6.0, Visual Studio 6.0 and version 1.2 of the Java programming language.

Section 2: "Real World Visual J++ Programming Issues" contains six chapters that delve deeper into the critical features of the Visual J++ IDE, the Windows Foundation Classes for Java, and Applet development.

Section 3: "Component Development in Visual J++" contains three chapters that review specific needs of some Visual J++ Projects, including using and creating COM objects, HTML development, and J/Direct.

Section 4, "Database Programming in Visual J++" contains three chapters that exploit the features of Visual J++ which! aid in the creation of data aware applications.

Section 5: "Advanced Programming Topics" contains five chapters that cover the most commonly needed advanced features by Visual J++ developers. These include distributed solution creation, I/O programming, and advanced topics of the WFC.

Section 6: "Appendices" contains an installation how to, other source of information on the Web, and a top notch index.

The text contains abundant code examples and step by step instructions, teaching the reader how to develop sophisticated Java applets and applications for a variety of needs. The new features of Visual J+ 6.0, including the Windows Foundation Classes for Java, HTML Authoring Tool, Distribution Projects, and J/Direct Call Builder are all covered in detail.

The book is great if you would like to learn how to apply Java using the Microsoft J++ environment, and learn how to create different types of projects using different techniques; however, I would not say that it is necessarily a good book for beginners who would like to learn the "ins and outs" of the language. The main criticism is that it does not "dig" into the language itself, enough. The projects provide early hands on programming, but the use of the language (in terms of the numerous functions and commands available) are not explored or explained - for this, you need to refer to Ivor Horton's Java 2 book, which provides a more than thorough review & exploration of the entire Java language! I would recommend this book, if what you want is to learn the J++ environment and certain techniques/tools, but you will also definately need a book that delves into the language itself to provide a solid understanding of the subject matter!

Upon quick review of the features documented in this book, I found it lacking in one very large area. In many of the chapters of the book it focused on using java.lang classes instead of the superior WFC related classes. For example, the I/O chapter focuses on using java.io instead of wfc.io which is more appropriate. It became clear that this book was a little premature and did not utilize the most important aspect of Visual J++ 6.0...WFC itself.
