Product Description

Book Description
This book will serve as both a tutorial and a reference. Each chapter builds on the previous chapters, thus expanding the readers knowledge. Additionally, the material is organized in a way that the reader will be able to easily reference when they later have a question. This book provides the reader with up-to-date coverage of what can be done with Active Server Pages. This includes coverage of Active Server Pages as they relate to Transaction Server, the Personalization System, the Personal Web Server (with Windows 95), ActiveX Data Objects (ADO), and much more. Unlike most of the competition, this book will assume more basic knowledge of VBScript and standard web page creation. This will allow the book to go farther and deeper into technical topics surrounding Active Server Pages. Most of the competitive books center on Windows NT and IIS. This book will expand the coverage to include using Active Server Pages on Windows 95 using the Personal Web Server.

From the Author
The book¿s purpose, targeted audience and organization
The purpose of this book:
With the integration of the Microsoft Internet Information Server 4.0, the Microsoft Transaction Server, and Active Server Pages, the power of distributing worthwhile applications over the Web is a reality. This book is solely dedicated to demonstrating the powerful functionality of Active Server Pages to deliver real-world applications over the Web.

Who should use this book:
With that said, this book is targeted for the application developer that have some experience developing client-server applications, but is also intended to provide a foundation for budding ASP developers. The goal of this book is to provide an effective knowledge transfer mechanism to enable developers to transition their existing application development experience into building robust, scalable, Web-based applications using Active Server Pages. At the same time, this book provides the foundation to help push beginning and junior level application developers into advanced Web based application developer roles.

How the book Is organized:
Parts I and II of the book are designed to give an architecture perspective and a primer of VBScript. This primer is intended not to teach every detail of VBScript, but is designed to show developers the needed programming functionality to rapidly produce ASP applications.

This book is organized in a manner that demonstrates what it takes to build, develop, and deliver Web-based applications. This book is separated into six parts, each part building off the proceeding to demonstrate the technical evolution of Active Server Pages. Each part of the book ends with an example chapter that demonstrates the use of the various topics covered in the preceding chapters. Even though the content of each part may be technically different, all of the examples focus on using Active Server scripts to build enterprise Web-based applications.

In a nutshell, the book utilizes the following topics to transition simple Active Server Pages into real Web-enabled applications:
Part I: Introduction to Active Server Pages
Part II: VBScript: The Foundation of Active Server Pages
Part III: Active Server Objects: The Essential Building Blocks
Part IV: Active Server Components: Extending the Server Functionality
Part V: Database Management with Active Server Pages
Part VI: Active Server Pages and the Enterprise Solution

1.0 out of 5 stars A very frustrating book, 6 Mar 2000
I am a developer working for a major IT consultancy. This book contains too much waffle and not enough concise technical explanation. Examples are sketchy and incomplete, and the most fundamental technical points are skimmed over or impenetrable. I found this book utterly frustrating to use, and it regularly fails to answer my questions. It's neither suitable for a beginner needing hand-holding, nor for a professional developer requiring a reliable reference. Try instead O'Reilly's ASP in a Nutshell, which in contrast is thorough but also concise and clear, and is also refreshingly honest about the discrepencies between Microsoft's technical claims and the way ASPs work in reality. And is also a third of the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Winner!!!, 29 Aug 1999
By A Customer
I am a certified MCSE. I am also currently pursuing an MSCD certificate. I do admit that some sections of the example codes in this book are not perfectly clear nor precise, however, the ideas and concepts of these example codes are pretty straight forward and self-explainatory. The book is very well organized and easy to read. It covers a vast topics in ASP, including DCOM, ADO, VB, InterDev, ODBC, MTS, ActiveX, Ms Queue, and also SQL Database -- basically, if all the previous topics mentioned above needed to be fit into 700 pages, Scott Johnson did it RIGHT, you can't ask for more. If you are working with MS SQL server 6.5 and IIS 4 server, and that you are following the exercises in the book like I had, you will be shock to realize at the end that you have built an n-tier internet and extranet front-end database application! Excellent book.
