3.0 out of 5 stars Introduction to Tai Chi, 2 Mar 2005
By M. G. SFAELLOU "Platanos" (Greece) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A very basic and easy to read introduction to Tai Chi (Ch'uan) and the photographs enhance the text. Mr. Stewart McFarlane has been a student of Chinese culture for many years and his approach is a plain and clear rather than heavy scholarly one. While no book can ever replace a teacher, it is possible to copy some of the positions by reading and rereading about the stances. It is a good alternative/supplement to ladies' yoga classes. The glossary, though by no means extensive, does help with a few of the terms. However, if someone wants a much more academic approach to Tai Chi about the philosophy etc.(rather than just this simple practicle guide) then perhaps another title offered by Amazon might be more suitable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the beginner, clear pictures and instructions., 29 Jun 2004
I bought this book to start learning tai chi at home as I have not yet found a class that I am able to attend. It is everything I hoped. Clear instructions, very good pictures and full of extra tips. Well worth buying for the beginner.

The author writes in a way the makes you want to practice, and the book has pictures of the previous movements along the bottom of the page to help you along the way.

Thoroughly recommend this book to all beginners. Especially if they cant find a teacher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative with excellent detail, 18 Aug 2000
By A Customer
I got this book when I had very little knowledge of T'ai Chi. I was looking for something that would teach me (no local classes). It has really given me excellent details on practicing in my own time. The detail of the pictures and the accompanied text is very clear regarding the transitions between the forms and stances. I acknowledge that it's no substitute for a teacher, but I would recommend this book for those who want to try it out in their home.
