I bought this soon after I got married. I love cooking, but I was at the time still new to the idea of cooking on a regular basis. It was Mary Berry who thought me to make a perfect omlet. There is definitely a difference. The leek and potato soup turned out so well, as did many others. There are picures for each step and detailed instructions, basically she holds your hand every step of the way, plus sections on preparation of vegetables and meats which are so useful. As a new cook it was extremely useful. It is enough to say that everything I have made from this has turned out to be delicious.

I have been using this cookbook for 5 years (since college) and I am still discovering intersting and tastefull recipes!
For new cooks it provides helpful advice and useful step-by-step processes. For veterans it gives nice ideas on traditional recipes and also contains recipes from all over the world. I have also found very helpful that it gives the metric information in both oz and grams, fahrenheit and celcius, etc.
I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a cookbook with a lot of advice and many receipes ranging from starters to deserts.

Since receiving this book as a present three years ago I have used it again and again, and I have now become famed for my Chocolate Brownies!. But I would add a word of caution, as there are still recipes contained in the book which I would not dare try, or which appear too complex. Though it is a very helpful book for teaching techniques to beginners, it doesn't contain "standard" recipes, but rather more unusual ones.
