5.0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book!, 7 Oct 2004
By RAMON (Santander, SPAIN) - See all my reviews
European readers of SF are used to be considered mentally handicaped or teenagers full of spots. This book is a vindication of SF as a genre, and also as literature. The author describes SF as any other kind of literature, with a historical, cultural and social background. Points out its merits not only as SF genre, but as literary works as well.
This book is an authoritative source for all those who like SF: more than 100 authors, cross references to films, tv series, magazines, historical events.... All is full of wonderful plates of first editions, old engravings of proto SF, etc... This book is clever, but is also fun.
Buy it if you want to enjoy a clever enjoyment, and it will give you thousands of reading tips. One wonders if the author has had time to read all those thousands of pages, see those films?
I'll pore a bit more in the 50's.
