Product Description

Review
"Bill Drath takes us out along the frontiers of leadership theory and gives us a new and even courageous answer to the age–old question: who is the leader and who are the led? A great read for those who want to move beyond ordinary thinking about leadership." (Jack Galvin, former Supreme Allied Commander, Europe (NATO) and Commander–in–Chief U.S. European Command)

"A penetrating analysis of the roots of leadership from one of the most original thinkers in the field." (David K. Hurst, speaker, writer, and consultant on management and author of Crisis and Renewal: Meeting the Challenge of Organizational Change)

"Changes forever the way we look at and consider leadership. The magnitude of Bill Drath′s contribution is only realized when you start to ask yourself what are the implications of relational leadership on how we develop leaders, evolve organization strategy, and drive change?" (Steve Mostyn, Senior Program Manager, Motorola University EMEA)

5.0 out of 5 stars Changes forever the way we look at 'Leadership' !, 22 May 2001
How often do we stop to question the underlying assumptions of what we mean by Leadership? Bill Drath - A thought leader with the wacky job title of Director of Complex Challenges at the Centre for Creative Leadership in North Carolina, in his recently published The Deep Blue Sea :Rethinking the Source of Leadership stops us dead in our tracks by asking the reader to question these underlying assumptions of leadership. This is elegantly evolved by the use of a central story of Zoffner Piano and it's leadership transition (indeed the role of story telling is a key tool in the new leadership kit bag) .Bill's unrelenting logic and argument builds a new lens on leadership that questions our assumptions of leadership as a characteristic of personal dominance, or one based on interpersonal influence but suggests a third evolution to one of 'relational leadership' His narrative on the evolution of leadership thought is well thought out and helps us understand what has shaped our notions of 'good leadership' to date.

Relational leadership is based on 'shared meaning' and that people create leadership by constructing the meaning of direction, commitment and adaptive challenge. Thus Leadership is more than and individual trait, but one of shared responsibility of making leadership happen. An intriguing quote from Drath challenges our assumptions on the 'War for Talent' 'I am suggesting that this lack of leadership comes about not because of lack of leaders, who could provide leadership in these contexts, but because the principles of leadership we already have are not capable of making leadership happen'

The magnitude of Bill's contribution is only realised when you start to ask your self what are the implications of relational leadership on how we develop leaders , evolve organisation strategy and drive change? If you stay with this part philosophy through story you will be rewarded by a new insight into what leadership means for you in your organisation and how you can best nurture and develop it.
