This book is a must for anyone interested in becoming a better leader, or understanding a leader better. However, it should be read in the order of your interets, as a good meal is consumed. Read an essay and then think about it. Then read another essay. This is a rich volume, describing many models for successful leadership. I found myself combining ideas from the many wonderful essays to develop more possible future best practices of future leaders.

I normally avoid books of essays by well-known authors. Each essay is usually just a reprint of a book or article that I have read before. It can be an expensive way to buy reprints. This book came free as part of my subscription to LEADER TO LEADER, the Drucker Foundation magazine, so I took a look at it. I was impressed to see that the book had works by almost all of my favorite business authors, and many executives and thinkers I admire, as well. Then came the pleasant surprise: Most people wrote new material for this book. I settled in for a treat, and had a wonderful time hearing these wonderfully uplifting concepts of how we can all accomplish more together by being better leaders. The editors did a good job of finding a variety of perspectives so although the articles are often describing the same points, they become clearer from the contrasting ways of describing them. The flow is also good, so the essays seem to build on each other in a way that is helpful. I especially liked the essays by the executives. One of the great benefits of the Drucker Foundation doing projects like this one is that there is a great respect for Peter Drucker that allows the editors to attract a better group of contributors and contributions. This should be an essential part of your leadership and business library, one that you should reread annually.
