4.0 out of 5 stars An eye-opening classic of spiritualist literature, 17 Feb 2005
This was a classic of spiritualist literature when it was written in the 1920s and is every bit as worth while reading today.

Whilst Dr Wickland applies electric shock treatment to his patients to dislodge obsessing or possessing spirits, his trance-medium wife allows herself to be controlled by them in order that they can be reasoned with and brought to a realisation of the higher life.

I don't know that I necessary agree with the presented view of re-incarnation and it is possible to close this book feeling a little paranoid that we are all some how being interfered with by the souls inhabiting the outer darkness. I'm not sure that we need ALL worry that much.

However, this book does provide invaluable insights into the topic. It is very comprehensive in it's treatment of the causes of obsession/ possession. One feels like screaming at our somewhat unsuccessful modern medical professionals that their institutions and medication merely contain rather than help the mentally unstable. Wickland's work also continues to make a valuable contribution to spiritualist discussion on the 'eternal progress of the human soul' and the need to serve. It is imbued with hope in this regard.
