1.0 out of 5 stars How did this ever get published?!, 21 Feb 2008
After the train wreck that was 'Saving Solace' I was afraid to even read this book. Gerard and Galdar were my two favourite characters from the War of Souls series, and this book was like seeing them in a horrific accident - I wanted so badly to put it down, yet I couldn't look away. With each page this book dug itself deeper into a pit of shameless and amateurish drivel. I couldn't believe that the Powers That Be of the Dragonlance universe would allow such diatribe to be published! I take small consolation in the fact that I didn't waste any money on this novel.

Sometimes I wonder if Mr. Clark even READ the War of Souls books by Weis and Hickman. He has taken the honourable Knight Gerard uth Mondar and stripped him of the intelligence, wit and resourcefulness that made him such a great character. Instead Mr. Clark turns him into a bumbling fool with a long-suffering attitude and jumps at any opportunity to make mention to Gerard's hair and appearance. The great minotaur Galdar is thrown in in a lame attempt at... parallelism? Clark's take on Galdar is one-dimensional and very, very disappointing.

These are NOT the same characters that Weis and Hickman created (and to compare Clark's writing to theirs is an insult to two of the fantasy world's greatest writers). The premise for the plot is weak at best, and it's a far stretch of the imagination to see these two characters working together under such a thin pretense, and their ultimate comradery and respect for each other is poorly developed. I've left better ideas in tightly coiled piles in my toilet!

The humour in this book is painfully obvious and it tries way too hard to be funny. There isn't an original concept in the book ("do you thumb your nose at me?" "I do not thumb my nose at you sir, but I do thumb my nose."), and Clark simply can't resist throwing in a kender for comic relief as though he is forever trying to come up with the next Tasslehoff Burrfoot.

All in all, this book continues the embarrassment that was Saving Solace - distorting and ruining cherished characters, regurgitating elements that worked for Weis and Hickman, stringing together a ragtag plot in an attempt to make it an integral part of Krynn history.

Please, Douglas Clark, PLEASE stop writing about Gerard uth Mondar and Galdar! 'Dragons of a Vanished Moon' left so many good options available for developing a great storyline with these characters, and thanks to you we'll never get to read any!
