5.0 out of 5 stars Campaign world with great potential, 25 Jun 2004
By Colin Wheeler "Books, Games and Films" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As this is the first major campaign concept out of Wizards of the Coast for Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 and their first new campaign world for a great number of years I was very keen to have a look. I have been a DM/Ref for more than 18 years and have played and ran many different worlds, both homemade and bought. Eberron is a very fresh approach to the classic D&D setting. A number of ideas that I have used and liked in the past are included in this book such as the concept of action points (emergency points that can be used to keep your players out of trouble or let them perform amazing feats) yet they have been implemented in a way that does not corrupt the core rules and ways of D&D.
The feeling of the campaign world itself is very good. It is complicated, very developed and hangs together with a noir feel that fits it perfectly. Although initially sceptical myself being a high fantasy "snob", I soon started to see the appeal of this more rough and tumble, action packed concept of a world. The development potential for DMs is limitless.
The information provided in the book is excellent, albeit at a very high level. Any campaigns to be run on this world will require either further development by the DM or the purchase of additional Eberron books as they come out. Myself, I can't wait for additional books as I don't have the time to do a lot of world development any more.
Artistically, I really like the book, although the art may not be what you are expecting. Most is typical fantasy (Wizards) art work but there are also some very different panes in the book. Personally as I say, I really like them.
The book is also not cluttered with too many new classes or rule extensions, magic or monsters. A lot of "campaign world" is presented in this book, making it according to me, already one a serious world contender amongst the Wizards' stable of campaign settings.
Try this book out if you are looking for a new campaign world to wow your players and get everybody enthused about D&D again and if you are willing to approach it with an open mind. This world is excellently done. Great job Wizards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesomely imaginative!, 2 Feb 2006
By J. Groom (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Right I have played D&D since I was 12 blah blah and since 1st Edition blah blah I have used Forgotten Realms since 2nd Edition blah blah. Now I first saw Eberron advertised with some teaser articles in a magazine and thought, here we go another setting we don't need. Then I got hold of a copy of this book cheap and was blown away.
It makes Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk and just about any other setting redundant and cliched. Every part of this book just oozes with ideas. It is a high magic (used kind of like technology in a lot of ways) yet also low magic and gritty (there isn't a 20th+ level character in every village like in Faerun). The world is big enough to be expanded upon by and DM and yet focused enough that every region has its own flavour and feel (something else that Faerun sorely lacks, I mean who knows anything about half the places on the poster map of the Realms?) and there are some cool new races that work really well (particularly with the Races of Eberron books), new slants on existing monsters, new monsters, new feats, new magic goodies and ways of creating them with magic gems called Dragonshards, a complete and evocative history of Eberron, (catch of breath) and just to top it all off the book looks great too.
In short, Eberron breaths new life into D&D and brings it crashing into the present without comprimising what makes it D&D in the first place - much like the release of 3rd edition.
Avid D&D players if you haven't already, you owe it to yourselves to check this out! I am converted!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another GREAT DnD Setting!!!, 15 Sep 2004
I started playing DnD about 6 months ago (somewhere in yearly 2004), I played Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, invented my own adventures, etc.

A couple of months ago I started researching for a brand new world for my campaigns, a world whit a steam-punk feeling, a magic filled world where magic was part of the natural lives of the world's citizens and denizens. I got the idea almost a year ago, from a contest wizards held, something about the new campaign seting for 3.5, the winner was Eberron.

After remering where i got the idea from I started researching after eberron, and the more I knew about it, the more I was waiting for it.

Finnaly I got it, and I was not disapointed, new races, new magic, new habilities, the dragonmarks, lots of detailed information about the world, a great initial adventure, good geography points, great artwork, great story-line, AMAZING!!! A master piece...

It's worth every euro I spent on it... Absolutely amazing...

BUY IT!!!
