3.0 out of 5 stars A blast from the past, 21 Oct 2007
By Wyvernfriend (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews

Too many years ago for my mental comfort I used to play Dragonlance. At the time I read the Dragonlance Chronicles and I recently decided to go back and pay a visit. It was much what I remembered, and actually it fared badly with the number of quite good fantasy books I've read since.

It does read like fictionalised role-playing sessions. The team are several different people with different reasons for what they do and I'm really not sure that in the real world they would be anywhere near each other.

Still it's fun to revisit, and it reminds me of my college years, I still like Raistlin and the team of half-elf, dwarf, kender, dark mage, barbarian, warrior and knight have appeared in a lot of books since. The cliches are the but many of the cliches started here. The Draconians are interesting and the path to the truth is starting to become clear.

It's an interesting story but it's not the best. Worth the journey back but I'm not sure I want to read more soon. Someday I may but sometimes forward is the only way to go.

3.0 out of 5 stars A pale imitation of a great master, 15 Aug 2007
By Laura Phillipson "Pern Fan" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this book on the basis of the many reviews and the 5 stars. I only bought this book of the trilogy as i remembered trying to read it many moons ago and failed.

I dont know if it is because I like science fiction more than fantasy but this book was just too magicky for me. There was very little depth and I constantly felt I had missed a prequel book which explained a lot.

In my opinion this book is more for readers with a strong inner child who want fairy tales for grown ups. I found the story (I cant believe I am saying this) unbelievable and the characters 2 dimensional.

Dont get me wrong I love some fantasy novels ie Eragon and His Dark Materials Trilogy, but the whole thing was a pale imitation of LOTR for me.

7 companions (Fellowship) going to a dark mountain (Moria) to do something with a staff (ring)with a wizard in tow (Gandalf) a dwarf (Gimli) a warrior and a half elf(Aragorn and legolas merged into one character) and Kender little person (Hobit) A beautiful elf is in love with the said half elf and it is forbidden love (er sound familiar at all?)

I am going to get the second book out of curiosity and i may eat my words (stranger things have happened!)

PS whats with all the Raistlin worship! The guy is a melted gold freak with hourglass eyes. For this reason alone I am prepared to carry on reading to see what the hell people are going on about!

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh so close to being the perfect book!, 11 May 2005
By A Customer
This is FUN! There's no other word for it. The style is almost a roleplay, sweeping you along with the action and the plot, making each character individual and believable...

Of course, this is the place to start. The first book in the first trilogy. Before you know it, you'll be hunting down copies of the other two, and then the second trilogy... then the third... then all the rest besides!

And this is where we first meet Raistlin. Who doesn't love a dark-souled mage? Darling Raistlin, star of the series! If you've no idea what I mean, you'll have to start reading, but remember - I saw Raistlin first!

Mine! Heh heh heh!
