5.0 out of 5 stars Dragonlance as it should be., 30 Jan 2002
By Daniel Woods (East Kilbride, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Chris Pierson certainly seems to have come out of nowhere, claiming only "Spirit of the Wind" and "Dezra's Quest" as his Dragonlance titles, but I cannot think of another author who has so perfectly captured the feel of the first novels by Weis and Hickman.

"Chosen of the Gods" centres around the quest of the First Daughter of Paladine to find the 'Lightbringer' of prophesy, tying in with the struggle of a commoner turned to banditry on the borderlands at the edge of the Istar empire. Fearing the loss of his crown to this 'Lightbringer,' the Kingpriest bows to corruption and Evil to retain his power, turning the military might of Istar upon its people.

The result is one of the few stories worthy of the Dragonlance title, one far better than most of the mass-produced nonsense that has been cranked out in the past. Varying between heroism, sacrifice, tragedy, and brutality, Pierson captures the Dragonlance feel completely. He has no shortage of fresh ideas that tie in seamlessly with established writings, and unlike most new ideas, a sense of credibility is maintained. For veterans of the series, the story contains several references to previous works, adding depth and making it seem like a part of the world rather than a bolted-on afterthought. Some old characters make welcome appearances: remember Loralon and Quarath from the Legends trilogy? And let's not forget one very dark, very evil, very powerful wizard...

A gem in any fan's collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare find, 6 Jan 2005
By madradubh (The Universe) - See all my reviews
Pierson has proved himself with this trilogy. Many of the Dragonlance books are pure bilge pumped out to cash in upon an excellent series. Pierson's novels deals with the period leading to the Catacyslm and the role of the city of Istar. This trilogy is well worth the money and effort and stands head and shoulders above the majority of the authors writing Dragonlance novels. Characters are well developed and it is not the usual 'fan' or 'groupie' novel. A great piece and a rare find amongst a heavily saturated genre.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment of a book for any true "Dragonlance" fan, 27 May 2006
By Marinos Tsimaris "Shirrack Dracko" (Guildford, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is all about the search for the `true' Kingpriest - while the trilogy stories the events leading to the Cataclysm-by the high priestess following a prophetic "dream" she had. The search begins after the reigning kingpriest has a revelation about the time of his death. Meanwhile, another seeks to secure that position by any means necessary.
At its early stages i really thought i was reading a book written by Weis and Hickman, especially the `Chronicles' series but it soon became obvious that it would be disappointing.
I would agree that it was a good fantasy novel if it was not a Dungeons and Dragon's one but when i read a D&D novel i expect it to feel like one, giving me the impression of a Dungeons and Dragons adventure (staying close to the rules of D&D as developed at the time i.e. abilities of characters, monsters, spellcasting, swordplay). If i wanted just any fantasy book i would read any of the 100s out there already in the market.

At some point i even laughed at the mention young Loren Soth (later to be the most infamous Lord Soth) because it was too much; too much of a coincidence of him being there, in our story just by chance.

Another factor which made me dislike the book was the lack of detail where it needed it and too much detail at other instances. Also the story fell short to my expectations.

The book and the trilogy felt like a hollow story to me even the fact that there are some good moments in it.
