3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but plain, 28 Mar 2001
By A Customer
'The Messenger' presents the story of the Arktos, a barbarian race of Icewall, of Kerrick, an outcast Silvanesti elf, and of the ogres who persecute them. Set some four hundred years after the Third Dragonwar, the time-period (or even the setting) have only the barest influences on the story. The drive behind the story is the Arktos' desire for safetly following the massacre of their kinsfolk by ogres. Their trek across Icewall leads them to a happenstance meeting with a Silvanesti elf who saves their lives. Meanwhile, the ogres learn that the the barbarians might be the key in a prophecy of disaster for them, and try their level best to eliminate the threat.

Niles seems to have opted not to make much use of Krynn's distinctive feel (passing references to Silvanesti, use of thanoi, and the odd interference by a cleric of Chislev don't cut it). The book therefore doesn't feel much like a Dragonlance book at all.

That aside, the story is coherent and the characters well-defined. The interleaving threads prevent the story from dragging out (although it's difficult to picture and work with an ogre's lust for an ogress--yuk!). And, of course, being part of a trilogy, there are dangling threads at the end.

Such as, who is Coraltop Netfisher..?

3.0 out of 5 stars Standard fare., 4 Dec 2003
I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Niles as the Moonshae trilogy was one of my first steps into the fantasy world. However although I quite enjoyed this book (and read it in two sittings - it's quite small) it just seemed to plod along, without much excitement. I found it difficult to relate or care for the main characters in the story (though I must admit to be a little intrigued by Coraltop) and when the end came I wasn't immediately reaching for book 2 in the trilogy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must read for fans of the DrangonLance!, 21 Jul 2001

I began reading this book with trepidation. Often I have read similar books of the DragonLance by authors I have never heard of and been bitterly disappointed. This one, however, captivated me and I couldn't put it down until the last page was turned. It is a good free-flowing story that is expertly written. Douglas Niles really makes you feel for Kerrick, cry for Moreen, and laugh at Coraltop Netfisher! You almost feel cold as the Sturmfrost unleashes it's awesome power and fear as the Ogres attack.... A well written, gripping story of the World of Krynn........can't wait for the next volume!
