3.0 out of 5 stars A good read, but definitely for Dragonlance fans only., 11 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Richard Knaak again comes to examine the goings-on in the minotaur empire with this latest novel. Set during the Summer of Chaos, it focusses on the minotaurs' attempts to repel the forces of Chaos. Seen through the eyes of Aryximaraki de-Orilg (descendent of Kaziganthi de-Orilg), the story carries with it a sense of grand happenings as Sargonnas and Kiri-Jolith themselves take interest in him. There's a strong feeling of the hopelessness with regards to the battle against the father of the gods, and the minotaurs seem fairly helpless against Chaos' hordes.

There were a few surprises in the plot which made it well worth reading through to the very satisfying ending. The typical Dragonlance sense of tragedy was preserved with the hardships Aryx had to endure, giving him a depth lacking in many other characters in the series (no mention of the first Fifth Age novels here...)

Complaints? It might just have been me, but there was too much fighting. The battles against the servants of Chaos seemed to go on forever, one blurring into the next. The fights were slightly more gory than normal in a Dragonlance book, but I suppose that only further emphasized the despair.

All in all, it's well worth picking up, and would make a worthy addition to any Dragonlance fan's bookshelf.
